Music Review: Prokofiev and Shostakovich - Violin Concertos No. 1 with Maxim Vengerov and the London Symphony Orchestracategories: Music, Classical, Concertos, Violin Concerto
Creator: Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich, Mstislav Rostropovich
Label: Teldec Classics
Vengerov is OverratedVengerov is without any doubt a good violinist, but I nearly always get the impression he doesn't catch the inner truth of the music. His playing is always very much on the 'outside' of the music: nice phrasing, musical approach, a lot of enthusiasm... but little depth. Just compare his reading of Shos 1 with David Oistrakh's. It's just light-years apart! Another aspect of Vengerov's playing that I don't like is his tone: it is very sharp in lyrical passages and really rude or brutal in more sherzo-like passages (like in the Prokofiev).
