Music Review: Joan Sutherland - The Greatest Hitscategories: Music, Vocalist, Classical Singer, Opera, Coloratura Soprano, Kennedy Center Honors, Joan Sutherland
Artist: Dame Joan Sutherland
Mush MouthThe singer was a wonder. But language too is music, and depending on her conductor, her diction could be good (it was never very good) or, most of the time, dreadful -- dreadful to the point of making her voice sound ugly; and as she got older, matronly full of swooping. Try to get recordings made as early in her career as you possibly can. Then her singing was truly superb! I don't think I've ever heard any human being sing more beautifully as she did in her youth before her husband stretched and wore her voice way the hell out of shape!
