Movie Review: The War of the Worlds - Special Collector's Edition with Gene Barry, Ann Robinsoncategories: Movies & TV, Science Fiction & Fantasy, Science Fiction, Alien Invasion, classic sci-fi
Technicolor Imbibition Process Three Strip NegativesMost people do not know about the Technicolor 3 strip imbibition process. It's a dye gel process, as the image is dyed into the film stock. Unlike eastmancolor, a photo-chemical process, the image is printed onto the film stock. I had the pleasure of seeing the War of the Worlds at a film revival here in Boston. The film was an original imbibition process Technicolor celluloid print. The film was also recorded on western electric 3 channel stereo magnetic film. Only a few hundred of these prints were released, due to the fact not many film houses had the equipment to reproduce stereo.
This DVD special edition comes as close to a Technicolor imbibition print as I ever have seen. Most people grew up seeing old 16 mm. Safety copies show on TV - not clear, grainy and very damaged. Buy this DVD version it's outstanding. Remember Technicolor was the bride, all the rest were just brides maids.
