Ronny Herman de Jongabout this book: SURVIVORS OF WWII IN THE PACIFIC is an Anthology of stories told to me by men and women I befriended, teenage prisoners who had suffered at the hands of the Japanese in concentration camps and prisons on the Island of Java. Their stories sound alike; the pain and suffering, the tortures and killings are similar. The lucky ones survived, but were not able to talk about their experiences for a long time. And sometimes their memories were so painful that they prefer to relate funny incidents instead. One of their survival skills was their sense of humor.
Other stories are by U.S. Navy men, one a survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack, all in their late eighties and nineties. Those are the courageous men to whom I owe my life; the men who went to war, not fully realizing the horrors that were in store for them; the men who fought the bloody war for the freedom of our country.
Some stories are excerpts from my mother's secret camp diary, published in my book RISING FROM THE SHADOW OF THE SUN.
And finally you will find a tribute to the Navajo Code Talkers who were instrumental in ending the war by using unbreakable codes in their native language.
From these stories I learned a lot about World War Two, "The deadliest conflict in human history". I hope that you also will gain insight in the history of WWII in the Pacific by the stories in this Anthology.
