Sammy Stein

about this book: This book is the journeys of women in jazz music. It tells their stories, it tackles issues and it includes a lot of humour. Featuring over 40 women who work in the music industry, from singers, musicians, women in PR, partners of musicians, the book broaches misogyny, it looks at the changing role of women in jazz music. Reviews include comments such as:

"one eye-opening narrative leads to a fascinating historical photo that leads to priceless quotes and offbeat reference sources, keeping the reader hungry for the next surprise Stein will veer off to" and "this is an extremely readable book that tackles head on a subject that can be controversial and thought provoking at the same time" and "Stein is to be commended".

The book came about because, as an author of jazz books and articles, many women I spoke to told me about their journeys in music, their adventures, the things they had to fight and over come. I asked women from a range of ages and cultures to come in on the book with me and luckily they all said ,'yes'. I have Tina May, Terri Lynn Carrington, Patti Boulaye, Barb Jungr, Jane Ira Bloom ad many more. Each women speaks openly and discusses their thoughts and ideas. It has proved a success and radio programmes, podcasts and blogs have featured both the author and the book.

The book is intended to share with the readers part of the journey of these incredible women.

 Stand out book

Such an eye-opening read, fabulous insights into jazz women. I had no idea things were still as bad as they are but the stories are told in a very engaging manner with respect and passion for the women and the music.

Brilliant, classy, informative. An amazing insight

Lots of Women, lots of stories, many tales and issue, put together by a knowledgable and expert writer. One adventure leads into another, the truth behind the issues is woven be an e pry. Hugely enjoyable and yet informative.
