Joan Fallonabout this book: This novel about a woman with Locked-In Syndrome is aimed at women readers who like a love story with a realistic but happy ending. When Teresa has a bad car accident her life is changed forever. When Teresa wakes up in hospital and becomes aware of her physical condition she just wants to die. She believes that she has nothing worth living for, and retreats into an imaginary world where she is a whole woman again. She ignores her family, who love her and prays to die. Her family try everything they can to help her but it isn't until her son finds someone from her past who manages to change her mind that she regains hope and can look to the future.
I did a lot of research into Locked In Syndrome and the treatment that is currently available. I also met a young woman with the condition and who leads a happy and fulfilling life, so I knew that although the subject was a difficult one, it didn't have to have an unhappy ending.
Although the story is primarily about Teresa's struggle to regain her life, it is also about how families, and individuals deal with tragedy in different ways.
