Joan Fallonabout this book: Nancy is an old woman, her memory is failing and she can be cantankerous at times. But she was once famous. So when her agent suggests she write her memoirs, she reluctantly agrees. The young woman who agrees to write them for her soon realises that Nancy is not telling her the whole story. Where is her husband for example? Who was he? Why has she been living in Spain for the last thirty years? Gradually Nancy's story is revealed and then the writer doesn't know what to do about it. Should she write it all in the memoirs? Should she tell Nancy's son? Or should she respect Nancy's wishes and forget all about it?
The action in the story is set in two locations: Marbella in the south of Spain and a small town in the south of England. The action is mostly in the present, with flashbacks to 1960's England. It is a story about a woman who had to fight for survival in a time when women had few rights compared to men, and should appeal to women readers.
