Obelia Akankeabout this book: I wrote this book because I wanted to read something that wasn't focused on stereotypes, drugs, gangs, etc. You get to follow Crystal and see the type of things young women can debate as they try to decide who they should date and what choices they should make. You get a glimpse of the intensity of creative artists (ex. spoken word poets), sometimes you may laugh out loud, and serious issues are addressed to get people thinking about the way we view certain subjects. With a best friend who keeps her grounded and a writer's group that helps her learn to express herself, you get to watch Crystal learn how to keep everything balanced all within a story that tends to make people say, "I can relate to that."
Crystal is a 21-year-old college student trying to regain her voice, self-confidence, and self-esteem. Heart of Crystal deals with several issues that affect multiple people on different levels. Within the African-American community, seeking counseling or asking for help may be discouraged. As someone who has worked in the mental health field, I want people to understand that getting assistance when needed is not a sign of weakness.
