Piper Templetonabout this book: I began writing Beneath the Shady Tree back in the early 2000s. That's when I used to meet regularly with a group of budding writers and we critiqued one another's work. The plot and characters were pretty well-developed and several chapters had been written.
Then it hit. Hurricane Katrina. Everyone in the New Orleans and the surrounding areas got blindsided by the Storm of the Century. The Worst Natural Disaster in U.S. History. All of these media-created sweeping titles are apt, but each individual person was affected, and remains affected, in very personal ways.
My writing, along with my life, got shelved. The manuscript and computer that contained the documents were destroyed in the storm. (I was luckier than many, however.) My life took a different turn and I did not get back into seriously writing for several years when I wrote and published my first novel, Rain Clouds and Waterfalls.
However, the characters and plot of Beneath the Shady Tree stayed lodged in the back of my mind. They wanted to make it to the page, and so I followed up my first novel with this character-driven women's fiction/mystery set in the New Orleans area.
