about this book: When World War II began to rage out of control all eligible men we sent into battle leaving the work to be taken over by any capable beings. That started the emancipation of women who answered their call to duty-- to do the work of the men. My own mother was one of these first pink collar workers who was employed by the Boeing Airplane Company, and yes, she learned how to handle a rivet gun.
Their daughters, like myself, and granddaughters followed suit. We, too, had to learn how to work side-by-side with men who still thought this was their workplace. Little did they know how hard we would fight for our equal rights and equal pay for those same jobs! And we won that battle with the strength of a good union standing up for our rights.
Based on actual events, this is story about six twenty-something white gals who work, laugh and love together under the headship of an older down-home black Southern woman. Typical of working in an extremely large factory, there is romance leading to marriage or a broken heart and divorce. There is sexual harassment, alcoholism, brutal gossip and mystery and intrigue when they don't really know the person working with them. They could be the son or daughter of a prominent politician or a convicted murderer. You'll find some great laugh-out-loud humor as well as big tearjerkers in this story as these gals many times struggle through their work-a-day jobs in sisterhood. It's more of an effort for some of the single ladies working undercover to find the traitor who's sabotaging their work, and-- surprise!-- one of these is of royal blood and another is a preacher. But who is what?
