L.B. Plumabout this book: Despite its dark subject matter, writing my first-ever novel, Kept, was an amazing and incredibly enjoyable experience. I've written children's books and screenplays for leisure more than half of my life, so a novel was a different (but very welcomed) beast. The story of Kept has been with me for over a decade, amazingly, however, not in its entirety. I didn't know how to bring it to fruition until last year when the story and its characters began to truly evolve, and I knew immediately that I needed to put pen to paper.
About two-thirds of the way as I was writing my book, the idea for the title came to me. By this time, I'd been working on my manuscript for over five months. It was truly discouraging, thinking my first novel would be titled "Untitled Manuscript" forever. Fortunately, just like the story, the title needed time to develop and evolve. As readers will discover as they journey through the pages of the book, there are multiple meanings behind the title, some more obvious than others. For example, we are all "kept" in some ways to ourselves and to others. In some instances, being kept by someone you love can be an honor, but in other ways it can be deadly dangerous. So, with no further ado, here is a little bit more about my work, with over ten years in the making.
Kept is a women's fiction novel that delves into the life of Sarah Graves, a San Diego native who falls for and spontaneously marries charismatic Jason Crosse. After Jason relocates to San Diego to be with Sarah, he's unable to find a new job and must depend on his new bride. His insecurities cause his true colors to show and the honeymoon is abruptly over when his affections turn abusive. However, Jason's intensely controlling personality keeps her under his spell. It's a relationship she's all too familiar with. Growing up, Sarah's innocence was robbed repeatedly by her stepfather– a man like Jason. She's unaware of the cycle of abuse she cannot escape. It is the only "normal" existence she knows how to live. But will she know how to survive?
