Vera Jane Cookabout this book: This book is about a soul named Annabel Horton. When she's hanged on Gallows Hill during the infamous witch trials, she does not die, in the sense we understand dying. She finds herself in limbo, able to move through time. Eventually she discovers she can take the body of others and she takes only the evil ones, leaving goodness alone. In other forms she is able to fight the devil and save her family estate. But there are obstacles, obstacles she will face to great peril.
I was inspired by a dream. I literally woke up thinking of the first few paragraphs of this book and I wrote them down. I think my interest in the afterlife and in history was at the root of this passion. I also think the book will attract readers who like to think that all things are possible, or certainly questionable. When we die, where do we really go, I wonder?
It took me a good two years to write Annabel Horton, Lost Witch of Salem. I did a lot of research and the plot is very involved. My research brought me back to the witch trials, the incident at Loudun, the nineteenth century. Great fun. The title just came to me. Most interestingly I found a real Annabel Horton buried somewhere near Salem. Spooky.
My publisher gave me a beautiful cover. It says it all. Poor Annabel cannot escape the evil eyes of the devil. I think Annabel is a bit more beautiful than the cover depicts but a minor point.
I like reading books like Annabel, long sprawling narratives in first person. I think my readers will be the same. The book is good escape and raises a lot of questions. I have deeply appreciated the following quotes from reviews:
• "This novel is amazing: beautifully written, gripping, and un-putdownable."
• "Excellent. Dark and deep this book gave me chills."
what to read next: if you read and liked this book...
