Emma J. Homesabout this book: Life is an adventure when you travel around Australia in a bus with your wildlife scientist parents, younger brother and sister, and a cheeky pet wombat.
For the past six months, ten year old Ruthie has been helping her parents to research rock wallabies, but now they've been called in to solve an important mystery. Why are the beautiful waterfall frogs suddenly disappearing from their home in the rainforest?
With short chapters and plenty of action, 'The vanishing frogs of Cascade Creek' will appeal to children who love animals and are fascinated by the natural world.
Author Emma J. Homes has cleverly weaved facts about frogs and their habitats into the fast paced fictional narrative.
The former journalist and science communicator said she was inspired to write by her mother, Ruth Homes, who is also a children's book author.
"There is something magical about having your mum read you stories straight out of her notebook. I've always loved reading, and still have a great fondness for children's books," she said.
Emma also drew inspiration from her time as a science communicator with the CSIRO, Australia's science organisation.
"The people I met at the laboratory, and the work they did, was so interesting. I wanted to give kids a taste of that, but through an exciting adventure featuring a girl and her family," said Ms Homes.
"Although it is a work of imagination, I checked with a noted frog scientist to make sure the information about frogs and the threats they face is accurate. Through the story, I also wanted to let children know that they can play a part in solving important problems," she said.
