Alice Oldfordabout this book: I've been a walker for years, thriving on the exercise and endorphins. My enthusiasm tends to be contagious, and my friend Sue Dziamara, a marathon runner herself, would often find herself exploring a trail with me in beautiful, rural Hunterdon County. On a hot August Saturday, I called her and suggested we walk at Hoffman Park in Union Township because it would be cool. We were enjoying our shady walk when we spontaneously looked at each other and said, "We should write a book." So many people are stuck in offices all week long, often never seeing the light of day, and they crave sunlight and fresh air. But, where do they start. Often their lives are so intense they have no time to plan an outdoor excursion, so Sue and I set about writing a book so they would know what to expect from their outing. We suggest where to go with or without children, what to wear, what to watch for and how much time is needed.
Early on in the process we settled on the title "You Can Get There from Here: Hiking Hunterdon County Trails". We wanted people to know that they could create a relaxing, challenging or family experience enjoying the beauty found right in their home County. Since I am also a Realtor, it seemed natural to create loop type hikes wherever possible. There is so much to experience, whether you're in it for the exercise or bird watching or an environmental or history lesson. It makes me smile just thinking of all the wonderful adventures/research.
After our book was published, Sue and I found our schedules no longer allowed our expeditions, but I kept on. There were still more trails to discover, and I decided to broaden my horizons to neighboring Counties. My partner/photographer for these outings was Jim Graham. Regular walking helped Jim control his blood pressure, and he always had his camera at hand. That led to the sequel, "Hiking NJ Trails – Hunterdon County and Beyond: You Can Get There from Here Too". We once caught some tadpoles in a pond in Miquin Woods, which I used for a presentation for children. We did return the tadpoles to the pond and when we checked later in the season, we found one all grown up.
To my way of thinking there is something for everyone, including accessibility, along the trails, and I am grateful to all those who cooperate to acquire, develop and maintain the land for our use.
