Yaniabout this book: Hoop Dreams Deflated is a book that was inspired by so many youths in inner city areas that suffer issues at home that are far greater than poverty alone. Mothers who suffer from drug abuse, absentee fathers and the desire to overcome adversities and realize their dreams without succumbing to the conditions they've been exposed to. Sometimes a dream is all that a lot of youths have to hold onto while trying to survive.
Davion suffers through more pain and sorrow from the age of five all the way through his teenage years than people who's lived twice as long as him. The harder he fights to make it through the tragedies of his mother's drug addiction and the sins of his father, the harder life seems to get for him. Just when he thinks he finally knows who to trust, life dishes another blow, only this time it's a deadly one.
I came up with the title as I was listening to a Jay-Z song where he said "I've seen hoop dreams deflate like a true fiend's weight". It was fitting for this book because that's what Davion felt was happening with his dreams.
I would like to say to my readers that if this book speaks to you or reminds you of someone you know, don't be afraid to extend some encouragement their way. Try to be a positive influence for them. Sometimes a small kind gesture can make a huge difference in a teen's life. So many are smiling on the outside but crying on the inside and no one really knows what goes on at home and what problems they face.
