Nancy M. Bellabout this book: Laurel's Quest is a multi-faceted work. On the surface, it is the journey a young teenager takes to solve a riddle that she hopes will help her mother get better. Underlying this theme is a peek into the world of myth and magic. Set against the mystical Cornish countryside of south-west England, Laurel and her three friends venture into the reality that exists just a step sideways from our every day world. Here they enlist the aid of selkies, Cornish piskies, the last Cornish giant, a sea monster, a Fire elemental, and the magic of the earth energies sometimes referred to as Ley Lines. Laurel's Quest is aimed at the Young Adult market, but more mature readers enjoy it as well.
I started working on this book after having a life changing accident. I went from charging along at mach speed to idling at zero miles/hr while my body healed as best it could. I spent many hours researching this book. The names of the characters are taken from the Tree Alphabet, other than Aisling. The attributes associated with the names give an insight into the make up of the character.
Laurel's Quest took over a year to write and longer to fine tune it. This is a work of love, it kept me from going insane with boredom while I was confined to bed rest. I have always written in chronological order before, Laurel's Quest was the exception so the hardest part of creating it was linking all the pieces together. Her quest takes Laurel and her friends along the earth energy line discovered by John Michell, so I had to research those places where there is a node of power and then figure a way for Laurel to discover it and then how to get her from one place to another.
At its heart, Laurel's Quest is a book of hope.
