Jobie Baldwinabout this book: Ink is a young adult urban fantasy adventure about Christian Blake, a disillusioned teenager with one true friend and a highly dysfunctional family. When he stumbles onto a mysterious tattoo parlour he can't resist going inside to take a look. This not unusual act of inquisitiveness sets off a sequence of events which transforms him and a group of new friends into immortal gods with a mission to save the world from a terrible threat.
I wrote the ubiquitous shitty first draft of this book eight years ago as part of NaNoWriMo. When completed I hated it, couldn't stand the sight of it, so I squirrelled it away in a drawer, then forgot about it (and any ambitions of becoming a writer).
This summer, only two months before turning 50, I was woken every morning by the voices of the book's characters in my head. They wouldn't shut up so, in the space of a month (August), I surreptitiously re-wrote the book in the early morning hours, when the rest of my family were asleep. The process was both cathartic and invigorating. I barely slept, caffeine became my new best friend, and like a princess waking from a hundred years sleep, I fell back in love with writing.
I'm in the process of writing the next instalment of the Tribe's adventures and I have the bare bones of a plot for the prequel. It is as if Christian and his friends have flooded me with inspiration. So I'm going to keep getting up in the pre-dawn silence and watch the sun rise over a cup of coffee and a computer keyboard.
