Michael Beaulieu about this book: Book of Shadows: Volume One: Casting begins a new, must-read, young adult, urban fantasy series about three sixteen-year-old girls who form a coven after the main character, Emma, finds her late, great grandmother's book of shadows -- a witch's spellbook and (sometimes) journal -- while cleaning out her house. It differs from most urban fantasy books because the spells the characters cast are based on real Witchcraft (often referred to as Wicca these days). Another way it stands out is that Emma's best friends, Lia and Shar, are a lesbian couple, which gets them bullied at the Catholic high school where the girls are forced to attend their junior year because the public school they went to is no longer in good standing with colleges. The first day of school the girls cast a glamour spell to make everyone like them, but it fails to work on the bullies and they only bully the girls harder as the book goes on, which ultimately leads to the catastrophic ending after the girls attempt to use magick to diffuse them. Other spells don't exactly go according to plan either. For example, the girls cast a spell for Emma to find her soulmate and it gets the boy of her dreams to talk to her, but then the school guidance counselor hits on her as well -- and she has the nerve to go tell the principal that Emma came onto her before Emma can go tell the truth! The girls attempt to deal with this with a spell to make the guidance counselor tell the truth, but that has an undesired side-effect as well. Ultimately, the book makes it clear that magick often comes with a price and that it can't solve everything.
