Lawrence Winklerabout this book: This is the first part of my five year trip hitchhiking around the world in the early 1980's. I think it is a 20th century odyssey, that will give value to anyone who thinks they would have loved to do the same thing. I left Canada with nothing, and travelled for five years without returning home. It was an epiphany. There are few people who have left home for five years without any contact for that time.
This was before cell phones, the internet, microwaves, AIDS, or a sense of real time connection with the rest of the planet. It was the last time in history a man could get away absolutely. It taught lessons I am still learning today. I left, promising my father I would leave him a copy of my book. I am now on my fourth book, and he has been gone for ten years. It is my destiny. No one has had this experience. No one can ever have it again.
