A Fine Book About a Difficult Journey

Mara Drummond has written a fine book in direct language, based on her own personal story and experience of transitioning, that is a blueprint for the one man in about 40,000 who has a female cognitive (mental) gender identity that is different from his male XY chromosome physical gender and persona, and wishes to transition from one gender to the other. It's known as "gender incongruity", "gender dysphoria", being "transgendered" or "transsexual". Ms. Drummond also acknowledges in her book female-to-male transsexuals, who are even less common.

This is not an easy path, and Ms. Drummond does not sugarcoat the process or its implications, offering straightforward advice for coming out to spouses, parents, siblings, children, friends, coworkers, even strangers. As a man she fathered two daughters and lost two marriages when she disclosed her preference for being a woman and began to act on it. She also gained friends and respect for her choice to live as she, in the reality of her perception, always has been.

She discusses the physical pain of surgeries and the financial cost, which over three years was substantial. She describes an unimaginably difficult road that starts with the utterance of "I think I'm transsexual" and "this incredibly hard commitment and transformation". She also stresses the positive aspects of transitioning: "It just feels right... an incredible feeling that my body is finally proper. When I walk nude in front of a full-length mirror I feel content and happy...I also feel strong, defiant and proud of who I am. [Transitioning]...instilled in me an immense sense of self-pride and self-worth". She advises, "...finding inner peace should be the primary goal of everyone who has an incongruent gender identity, and who suffers internally as a result of living his or her life in the wrong gender", and wishes the reader, "I hope you find peace within yourself and in your life". This is a worthwhile book.
