Toni Noelabout this book: In Rising Above a 21st Century misfit finds herself thrown back in time to 1874 when her hot air balloon crashes in a storm. How can she get back to her home in Riverside, California, where she has a job with Caltrans, but no real friends? And if she can't, how is this tomboy ever going to adjust to wearing high-top women's shoes and long skirts?
Rising Above is set in a silver mining town of Cerro Gordo, on a mountain top that looks down on the Owens Valley and Death Valley, where the heroine's hot air balloon race was suppose to end. A photographing trip to the restored ghost town inspired this book. My tall and homely looking heroine did the rest. In a silver mining town with thousands of miners and the only single women working the cribs, my heroine's unexpected arrival created quite a stir. One miner proposed to her on the spot. The hardest part of life in the nineteenth century for the heroine was leaning to cook on a wood burning stove.
