Book: The Ledger - The Tale of a Coroner and a Time Traveler by Chuck Boeheimcategories: Book, Murder Mystery, Coroner, Medieval, London, Maps, Time Travel
Chuck Boeheimabout this book: Not long ago, I stumbled upon a study that had been published by University of Cambridge that compiled an interactive map from the Coroner's records in the early 1300s, just before the birth of Chaucer. A wide range of deaths from violent to sordid were listed.
My first thought was that this would be an invaluable resource for any time traveler visiting that place and time. A bit later I became curious about the role of Coroner throughout history, and found that it had begun just a few decades prior to this period, with the main function of being a tax collector for the Crown.
Soon I had an image of Bartolomeo Ellinthorpe stomping around in my head, and the only way to keep him from poking into things I would rather keep hidden, I let him out into this story. It's quite short, just a vignette of the times and the person, really. Maybe someday I'll spin it out into a longer tale, but I hope you enjoy this brief glimpse.
