Vanessa Brooksabout this book: Coming home in the car one evening during a thunderstorm I saw lightning illuminate an ancient barn with a 17th century house silhouetted behind. As I drove on a tale began to form in my head- there and then Lightning Switch was born.
I am lucky enough to live in Sussex, a historically rich part of the country. Rudyard Kipling's house Batemans is situated very close by. This 17th century home was built by a successful maker of iron goods which were widely used in the era featured in my story and so I used the house and the history of iron works for the setting of this book.
This is the tale of Duncan Miller, a young teacher with no family ties. He is caught outside in a thunder storm, whilst cycling back from work one evening. He finds that quite by chance he is passing the property of a friend and, as the thunder, rain and hail become heavier, he decides to take shelter within the barn. As he stands watching the tempest from the cover of the barn doors, he is struck by lightning.
Waking up in 1640, Duncan discovers that he now resides in another man's body, that of Hugo Wylde, husband to the very pretty Bridey Wylde. It takes Duncan a while to acclimatize to the fact that he has travelled back in time and may never return to 2004.
Duncan is a modern man who believes in the equality of women and, as such, he is wholly unprepared for a wife who is bewildered and hurt by his lack of discipline when she breaks the rigid rules laid down for her by her 'previous' husband. Bridey is confused by the sudden change of character of her previously strict spouse.
Once Duncan has accepted that his destiny might lie permanently in the 17th century, he remembers that soon there will be a civil war in England and he must prepare his family to survive this ferocious conflict that divides the country and sets brother against brother.
Can Duncan become a man of the times or will he fail miserably in meeting his wife's expectations of him? How will he cope guiding his family through the traumas of the English Civil War?
I hope that my readers will enjoy this sensual, yet thought provoking tale.
