Leanne Owensabout this book: Friendship and love - two of our greatest treasures in life...reading 'Zo' will help you understand that important truth. The characters in 'Zo' realise this and, despite being wealthy and famous, they are prepared to give everything up to help their childhood friend. Sometimes, being a friend means you believe the impossible. And, sometimes, the impossible happens.
Four Australians recall growing up in Geelong in the 1960s and 1970s, and remember the friend who saved their lives and made them whole. Ally Lamore lifted them out of lives of collapsing mediocrity and gave them the courage to fly into amazing futures. At age fifty-nine, after decades of searching, they find Ally and realise that their love for their childhood friend is so important that they will give up everything to help her.
Part of helping her is listening to the story she is finally ready to tell - a tale of loving a man five hundred years ago. Ally weaves the story of the mysterious Elli and Lorenzo de Medici, the ruler of Renaissance Florence. The reader goes back in time to Italy in the late 1400s - the beauty, charm, and people of Lorenzo's circle, including Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Machiavelli. But how can any of that be real? And what are the dark secrets lying at the heart of Ally's life?
I wrote this book because I grew up in Geelong in the sixties and seventies, and the places the 'Zo' friends go and the things they do are borrowed directly from my childhood. In 1974, when I was 14, I fell in love with Lorenzo de Medici in my high school history class, so have spent a lot of decades learning about him, his friends, and his enemies, and thinking about him. There is no Elli mentioned in history, but she fits in perfectly, and her existence helps explain some historical facts. I am an English and History teacher with a Master's in Education, so I hope my research holds up with Lorenzo's life... but if there are errors, blame it on this being a work of fiction.
I hope readers enjoy reading a book that doesn't have graphic sex scenes, but does have love at different ages, from falling in love at ten to falling in love at fifty-nine. It's not a rollicking fast read, there are no dragons or magicians - it is a study of the lives of these Australian people, it is a homage to friendship, it is a dedication to the amazing people of Renaissance Florence. I want readers to finish the book and feel that they, too, love Zo.
