Morgan McFinnabout this book: 'An Eclectic Journal…Thailand' was written while McFinn lived in a wooden bungalow along the Gulf of Siam south of Bangkok. It consists of random musings and observations that are primarily meant to be amusing although McFinn does try to come to terms with the death of a good friend. Most of the work is set within the rural confines a seaside village named Ban Krut. There are several sojourns to Phnom Penh (Cambodia) where McFinn attends to the development of a young Khmer girl and her family with whom he was recently reunited after a six year hiatus. His main concern is with presenting them with education and employment opportunities that will improve their lives.
Otherwise, the journal features a cast of engaging characters that provide scintillating dialogue and reflections upon the lives of ex-pats who have washed ashore in Southeast Asia. Also, transient tourists on a three week adventure away from the relatively staid routines of their conventional existences 'back home'.
Many of the entries were inspired by McFinn's motorbike cruises around the serene setting of rice fields and rubber plantations. The journal meanders merrily with total disregard to plot. It's the McFinn Way.
