D.R. Meredithabout this book: The press has dubbed him "The Boulevard Butcher;" Sergeant Schroder of Special Crimes and other officers of the Amarillo Police Department know him as a serial killer. His prey are the prostitutes of Amarillo's sleaziest street: Amarillo Boulevard. But one of the victims had the good sense to contact the Texas Panhandle's most eccentric and most ruthless criminal defense attorney: John Lloyd Branson. But inexplicably John Lloyd refuses the case because the woman who wrote him is now dead. His part-time legal clerk, law student Lydia Fairchild, is incensed by his actions and John Lloyd fires her during an argument. Determined to help the victimized women Lydia masquerades on the Boulevard as a prostitute and searches for clues to the Butcher's identity. An altercation with a pimp sends Lydia to a disreputable bar where she meets Sergeant Jenner, suspended from Special Crimes and masquerading as a homeless bum while he also searches for the Butcher.
Found beside a murder victim, Lydia is arrested for murder, which of course brings John Lloyd to the rescue. The attorney has also received a phone call from the Butcher threatening to add Lydia to his list of victims. In a dangerous game of masquerade, Lydia becomes the bait to lure the Butcher out of hiding.
• "A delight for the gourmet of mayhem: sparkling characters, a diabolically dovetailing plot, and some of the most brittle writing this side of McBain." — Loren D. Estleman
