Author Jamie McGillianabout this book: "You are in the middle of living your life. Maybe you are watching Big Bang Theory repeats. Maybe you are cutting up some veggies for a salad. Maybe you are putting on your favorite sweat pants. All of a sudden, you get this flutter, this chill up your spine. You hear the word, Jack. All your senses become numb. You can't believe that this world, which contains such beautiful things as sapphires and coffee beans and beaches and rivers and chocolate and lilacs and puppies, also contains Jack. Jack. He's this crazy, mad boy who is really into you and he's got dimples and he makes you smile a smile that just wants to leap out and grab Jack."

This is a book for teenage girls, about first love. It is written from the perspective of 16-year-old Lacey Bryce, a funny and sweet girl who is trying desperately to convince herself and the hot and charming Jack Powers that she is in control of the situation and capable of being hip and chill and in a relationship.

"Jack is whispering in my ear. Something about what it feels like when he kisses me. I can't quite make it out. He's kissing my neck and making me feel like I want to scream out the lyrics to my favorite Christmas songs. I have to force myself not to do it. I have to tell myself to be cool. Do not shout out something lame, like "Rocking around the Christmas Tree." Thank God I only say this in the safety of my own head.

Lacey shares her thoughts about how it feels to be Jack's girl. She'd rather think about him and his irresistible smile than think about how her mother is sleeping with the gym teacher. That may not seem so odd, but Lacey's mom has not had so much as a date in 16 years! And then there's Gramps, Lacey's aging grandfather who is losing ground quickly. Lacey just wants to keep it all together and keep Jack's arms around her.
