Roger E. Brunerabout this book: I got the idea for this novel in walking around the mall and noticing all of the teen girls displaying their muffin tops with bare midriffs. Yes, how they looked bothered me, but not as much as the thought of what that unneeded fat would be apt to do to their health later in life if they don't do something about it now.
Obviously, I dared not walk up to some strange girl--or even one I knew--and say, "If I'd paid attention to the doctor and lost weight sooner, I probably wouldn't have become diabetic."
But I could write a book involving the weight loss struggle and make it a teen romance about a girl who wants to lose weight to attract a boyfriend and asks her best friend--a boy--to help her. She has no idea he has romantic feelings for her or what she's asking in wanting his help. Like any good romance, this one works out well in the very end. But it has a few interesting twists and turns along the way.
I originally made the mistake of publishing WHAT IF? as PROJECT MUFFINTOP. The cover showed a muffin cup that resembled a pair of girls jeans. And it had a muffin spilling out over the sides--like a girl's muffin top. Thanks goodness the Avid Readers of Christian Fiction talked me out of using that cover and making the diet too much of the plot.
This is a great novel for Valentine's, but enjoyable anytime. And even though it may be of more interest to younger or mid-teens, it's a good read for adults as well. The story doesn't simply refer to a teen's muffin top issue, but to one of her parents'.
This is a Christian novel, although that shouldn't be a turnoff for non-Christian readers.
I don't try to make money with my novels. I price them just above the lowest price Amazon allows me to use, and the Kindle editions of all my books is $1.99. All of my books are available to read with Kindle Unlimited.
Every good novel needs to entertain its readers. But if it's preachy, it's going to fail. I believe JUST FRIENDS? is both entertaining and thought-provoking.
