Roger E. Brunerabout this book: What makes this teen novel about two preachers kids who consider themselves misfits really personal is the fact I grew up a preachers kid who felt like he was a misfit. I just didn't seem to belong, and I attributed a lot of that to my father's vocation. My supposed peers didn't seem to go out of their way to make me feel accepted--at least that's how I remember it--and the things they could afford that I couldn't was a real problem at times.
Even though I wrote this for teens, I think adults will find it to be a fun--and at times a very moving--read. Especially if they had trouble being accepted during their teen years.
I hadn't planned the book around this Scripture:
You're blessed when you're content with just who you are--no more, no less. That's the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can't be bought.
Matthew 5:5, The Message
But when I discovered that verse in The Message edition of the Bible, it fit so perfectly that I reference it several places in the novel.
I hope and pray that this book will help its readers--especially teens--to accept themselves more as they actually are and to focus less on being frustrated at not being who they think they should be.
