about this book: A number of my novels are about China. This is because my wife and I spent two separate years in China teaching conversational English to Chinese students. We didn't have to teach them English grammar, or vocabulary, or how to write essays. All we had to do was to get them to speak in English. We didn't know what to expect when we first arrived in China, and they didn't know what to expect either. But we settled in and got over what was in reality only a minor culture shock. We lived and worked in a middle school 400 kilometres from Shanghai in that first year and at a college almost 300 kilometres from Beijing in the second later year. We were far removed from the big cities. During those two years we sent emails to friends and family back home, telling them about our day-to-day existence, about the places we had travelled to in our free time, and the experiences we had survived. My younger sister persuaded me to put all of these emails into a book. We had deleted most of our copies, but friends and family rallied around, and I think we recovered most of them. So, if you are thinking of going to China to teach, then read our Emails from China and don't waste any more time deliberating. Go. It is one decision you will never regret.
