John F Leonardabout this book: Bad Pennies is a supernatural horror novel that I hope will stay with you long after reading. It's about morality and need. Money and greed. And deeper, darker forces that never go away. Those forces change their shape and methods, but always bubble up to the surface. They find a way through.
More specifically, it's about an ordinary fella, Christopher Carlisle, who gets caught up in something that's far from ordinary. Chris just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and then makes a bad decision.
Seeing a stranger die is a bad. Picking up the dead man's wallet is a mistake, a moment of weakness. That's all it takes, one impulsive act, for reality to unravel. Because pocketing the wallet is only the beginning. What follows hinges on the timing and his choices. Or maybe it doesn't. Maybe it's never as simple as that. Perhaps there are things that swim below the thin veneer of what we happily refer to as reality.
Bad Pennies is the culmination of approximately 18 months of work. It's very loosely based on my childhood and incidentally spawned two other as yet unfinished novels. In many ways, the most difficult aspect of the book was the cover which went through several incarnations before arriving at the current version. I'm very pleased with this because it represents some of the essential elements of the story. It depicts a man, monstrosity and everyday walls ...the walls are thinner than we realise.
