Book: 50 Tips for Successful Meetings - 2nd edition 2017 (Spearmint Tips Booklets Book 8) by Beverley Williamscategories: Book, Better Meetings, Stop Wasting Time, Remote Meetings, Online Meetings, Effective Meetings, Successful Meetings
Beverley Williamsabout this book: I cannot stand meetings where nothing gets done, where people seem to be satisfied to stand up, after a period of time that seems to prove Einsteins theory of relativity, and walk away with no-one having any action points or any decisions having being made. What were we there for?
Another particular bugbear is when the person calling the meeting has not checked the technical needs if people are joining remotely. No, I do not want to get up at 6 am to log in to a global team meeting for someone to spend 15 minutes trying to get the sound to work!
I think it's fair to say that I wrote this tips booklet because I have seen so much frustration in meetings! Or maybe that's just me but I don't think so.
There are so many ways a little advance thinking or action can make a meeting useful and time well spent. The tips are not rocket science, anyone can do them but as the amount of time wasted in meeting plainly shows not everyone does.
My research for this book consists of many years of training on effective meetings, introducing better meetings culture into organisations and being a participant in many of them. Writing the Tips Booklet was a great way of 'rounding up' the key points on the topic. You could say it took me 2 hours to write it or you could say it took me 20 years depending on whether you mean gathering the knowledge or bringing it all together. This is the 2nd edition and it was interesting to see how technology has changed our lives, we now expect to see people on screen in meetings if we aren't in the same office, it has made people seem very much more real if we wouldn't normally meet them in person.
I suggest sharing the tips to discuss how your meetings could be improved with people you regularly meet with. Start the ball rolling yourself by committing to making just one change where you know you could do better and asking everyone else to do the same.
