Berley Kerr

Author Berley Kerrabout this book: Curse Breaker: Guild Assassin is an alternate history steampunk novel that is the first of a six book 'Steam Opera' series. I've always loved steampunk since I was a kid and whether it was reading Jules Verne or Mary Shelley or playing video games like Final Fantasy VI or Chorno Trigger or watching anime such as Last Exile or Full Metal Alchemist. The subgenre has always fascinated me and it's always been my goal to write a series that is not only exciting and new but also pays homage to all the things I grew up watching or reading as a kid. The rough draft took about 6 months to write and about a year to rewrite. Curse Breaker was a novel that I had to do hours of research on. Because of both the scientific and historical influences, I spent hours researching both. I researched wormhole and wormhole technology, extra-solar planetary systems as well historical empires and their various religions such as Rome, Alexander, Byzantine and a few others. I wanted this novel to touch on as many subjects as humanly possible. If there's one thing that I've learned from writing this novel is that it's always better to ask as many questions as possible. How can you know the answer if you don't ask? I believe Curse Breaker appeals to both die hard gear heads as well as the casual sci-fi-fantasy reader.
