Book: Thus Saith Hollywood - Using Movie Dialogue to Stimulate Spiritual Thought by Michael Elliottcategories: Book, Essays, Movie Quotes, Bible Verses, Biblical Truth, Film Reviews, Bible, God, Spiritual Perspective
Michael Elliottabout this book: I challenged myself many years ago to look for biblical truth reflected in the movies that I would watch. I figured that if God created life, elements of His handiwork must be evident within life. Since art imitates life, screenwriters, actors, directors and the like have no choice but to borrow from God's original creation to make their movie.
Thus Saith Hollywood was born from this idea. Comparing and contrasting movie quotes and scripture verses, I use films as a springboard to think about God's truths and how they apply to our lives in personal and practical ways.
The book is divided into one hundred small devotional essays, each one featuring a different quote, scripture and topic. With three different indexes, referencing and cross referencing is easily managed.
By actively participating as an audience member, thinking about or reflecting on the Bible while watching a film, and repeating this process every time, I found myself training my mind to automatically think about scripture in response to stimuli. This practice was carried outside of the theater as well - seeing examples and elements of His truth reflected in my own life and situations. It was an unexpected benefit for which I am immensely thankful.
