Book: Neema Wants to Learn - A True Story Promoting Inclusion and Self-Determination (Finding My World) by Jo Meserve Mach & Vera Lynne Stroup-Rentiercategories: Book, Africa, Learning Disabilities, Friends, School, Picture Book, Special Needs
Jo Meserve Machabout this book: Neema Wants To Learn is our first international book. We decided we wanted to include children from around the world as we promoted the inclusion and development of self-determination in children with disabilities.
Neema lives in an orphanage in Lushoto,Tanzania and has learning disabilities. She loves to learn and wants to become a teacher someday. She learns by playing ball with her friend, Joseph. She learns by helping the children at the orphanage. She learns by cooking with Mama Mdemu. She learns by studying. So Neema learns in many different ways.
This book was a huge challenge to write as our photographer,Mary, went to Tanzania on a trip with staff on a grant project focused on building the inclusion of children with special needs into the school system within Tanzania. Mary had to develop relationships with staff at the schools and manage working with translators to be able to take photographs for creating a picture book story.
It has been a true delight to see how the photographs and the story came together to share a dream of a little girl living in an orphanage in a small village in Africa.
