Book: Special Ed Mom Survival Guide - How to prevail in the special education process and discover life-long strategies for you and your child by Bonnie Lee Landaucategories: Book, Parenting, Learning Disability, Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Special Needs, Special Needs Parenting, Special Education
Bonnie Lee Landauabout this book: I wrote this book because I want to help moms to help their kids in special education without the moms losing themselves in the process. Navigating special ed is an emotional roller coaster, and most moms are not prepared for it. By the time they figure out the system, they have lost years of options for helping their child. I want to provide supports that allow the mom to have eyes open so they aren't blindsided by the emotions or the difficulties the schools prevent in providing help.
When my son was 6 a neuropsychologist told us he would never have a typical life. She suggested we begin saving for his group home care for when he grew up. He is now 15, in general education, an honor student, and destined to live a typical life. That never would have happened if I hadn't taken charge, found solutions and envision a day when he would be improved to the point he would be just fine.
I want Special Ed Moms to know that to truly help our kids, they also have to take charge of the special education process. Most moms don't know this. They rely on the school, and by the time they realize that school is not going to fix the problem, the child has lost years of opportunity to make gains. I share what can be done at home to help their child improve while also getting the best support possible from schools. Many districts, if not most, are very difficult when it comes to providing special education. So while moms really hope the school will help, the schools know how to manipulate the system so they can avoid providing services. Also, many of the best solutions the schools cannot provide because they are medical or not research-based, and the school is not allowed to provide them. Moms need to see the full breadth of what is available to help their child improve, and possibly even recover.
While the special education process is challenging, I want Special Ed Moms to know that they have the power to make the biggest difference in your child's life. They need to take charge of their child's education and find solutions that will have a life-long impact so their child can achieve optimum success.
