Author Vera Jane Cookabout this book: Learning about life the hard way, Sassy finds herself in Carson Corners, South Carolina embraced by a family she never knew she had. Unfortunately, family secrets sever some of the deepest bonds when Sassy is abandoned by her mother. During the turbulent race riots of the sixties, she learns that love is a great deal stronger than bigotry and boys are not always what they seem. In a life of turmoil, sadness, joy and disappointment, Sassy survives it all.

I think the readers for my book enjoy southern fiction with a bit of bite, love and obstacles overcome. The story begins at the beginning and ends at a new turning point for Sassy as she starts anew in later life. The story can be unsettling but I believe it's a journey worth taking.

My five star ForeWord review said the following: Cook has penned a sweeping coming-of-age saga that is sure to appeal to fans of romance and drama. Sassy, an assertive, observant protagonist, gains the reader's sympathy at the outset; in the manner of Jane Eyre, she survives the hand fortune has dealt her through sheer will, rising up to meet every challenge.

I love southern fiction and the south inspires me. I honestly did not have a plan when I set out to write this story, it just came, as if the character sat down beside me and whispered her narrative in my ear. I loved writing this book and it took little research. I still remember the sixties and you couldn't live through it without being jarred by it for the rest of your life.
