Melinda Claytonabout this book: As a young girl growing up in depression era West Virginia, Billy May Platte had thrived in the tiny coal mining village into which she was born, blossoming in spite of the fact that she was orphaned, her father a victim of the mines and, later, her mother dead from cancer. Loved by her peers, Billy May rarely questioned the tragedies she had experienced; tragedy was, after all, simply a part of life in Appalachia, and like most of the mountain folks, Billy May was adept at living through crises.
Sadly, all of that was to change. After witnessing an incident in which a teenaged Billy May's sexuality is called into question, three local boys gone bad decide to teach her a lesson she will never forget. Not only do they succeed, their horrific attack on Billy May changes the dynamics of the little village, population 197, forever. Everyone, from Gerald Smith, the elderly owner of Mr. Smith's General Store, to Sue Ann Leary, the spoiled daughter of the town's only doctor, to Corinne Pruitt, Billy May's childhood best friend, is affected by the event in ways they could never have anticipated.
Thirty years later, living high on Crutcher Mountain in self-imposed isolation, Billy May discovers the hideout of a desperate young girl. Upon learning the identity of the child, Billy May must make a life changing decision. The child's stepfather, Roy Campbell, is one of the three men who brutally attacked Billy May that long ago night. Roy and the other surviving attacker, Jimmy Williamson, have now turned their attentions onto young Jessie, and her life is in danger. Billy May feels she has no choice but to step in and protect the girl. In her own words, "I understood even then that my decisions might very well be the death of me."
Appalachian Justice is a story of prejudice, tragedy, love, and most of all, hope.
