Adam Yameyabout this book: Life was tough in rural southern Africa in the 1870s.
This was certainly the case for Jakob Klein, the hero of "ROGUE OF ROUXVILLE".
An immigrant from Bavaria, he lived with his wife and their ever-growing family in Rouxville in the Orange Free State. In his continuing struggle to support his family, Jakob often resorted to business tactics that many regarded as being dubious.
Eventually, the law caught up with Jakob. He lost his home, and was imprisoned - bail having been refused. His homeless family were forced to flee across the border into the Cape Colony.
Alone and in jail, Jakob wonders what will become of him and whether he will ever see his family again.
"ROGUE OF ROUXVILLE" describes his story, how he got into trouble, and then how he extricated himself from it. The tale is loosely based on material, which the author gleaned from the National Archives of South Africa. Jakob is modelled on one of the first of the author's relatives to immigrate to what is now South Africa.
This is a historicalnovel aimed at a general readership, but may appeal particularly to those readers who are interested in South Africa and its troubled history.
