Elizabeth Baileyabout this book: This short Regency romance inspired a whole series. When I was recovering from a major operation, and had not written for some time, I was invited to write for an anthology of Regency short stories based around a chocolate house. It so happened that the story I chose to write was kind of a Cinderella type romance, and it got me thinking.
What happened to all those women who had no dowry, who were born within the gentry but into genteel poverty? Women who had no expectation of marriage - the main aim of every female in those days, just for life security if not for love. What if you didn't have relatives who could take you in? Or if they spurned you? If you had to earn your own living?
Realistically, there were only two choices open to a genteel female who wanted to work: companion or governess. For governess, read also schoolmistress. That was it. Anything else was unthinkable and would slip you so far down the social ladder there was no way back.
Thus Clarice. Through no fault of her own, she is penniless and reduced to earning her own bread. When her new post proves void, she is literally destitute and with no idea what in the world to do. Enter Gervais, a French emigre who understands her plight and proffers his help. Unfortunately, his friendship leads her into association with the man she regards as her deadliest enemy.
