In my story, my heroine is born with a deformity that affects her ability to see what a unique and beautiful person she is. All she can see is her "Shortcomings," although they only define her because she lets them.
So far, Spencer hasn't realized he's different, but the day is coming soon because children tend to become less forgiving as they grow older and become those who stare or make unkind remarks at anyone who stands out. One in one hundred children born today (mostly male) will be diagnosed with some form of disability that falls beneath the autism umbrella. I'm blessed because Spencer is a loving and caring child rather than many who can't stand to be touched or held. So, he flaps his arms when he's excited and 'stims' when he's playing by himself...his "Shortcomings" make him the exceptional child he is, and my heroine learns through the caring of a few that the actions of many do not "define" her. I hope you'll enjoy the story and share it with others. This is a message so many need to hear.
