Ian Hutsonabout this book: This book is most emphatically not about dogs. There is a dog in one of the stories, but he's very, very lazy.
The opening line of the first story is "AWOOGAH AWOOGAH", and everything goes down-hill from there – quite deliberately. This book harks back to an era when books were for entertainment, for laughs, for giggles, and for about two shillings and sixpence for a paperback copy.
When not in the English Empire colony of Outer Space, all action takes place in England. Or Australia, which is actually better than the real thing, when you think about it, having more space, fewer politicians and better weather. The speculation is wild, the science ridiculous and the plots wouldn't tax the mental abilities of an intelligent worm – and it's all good, clean, fun.
Aliens are thwarted, cross-legged robe-wearing gurus are updated and brought back within the folds of reality, extremely wet water is invented, there's a spot of a problem with the shape of the moon and even democracy itself is turned on its head.
This isn't "space opera", it's more the equivalent of an idiot singing to himself under a lonely lamp-post, just before the meteorite hits.
