Chuck Boeheimabout this book: I met Dan working in IT at Cornell University. We quickly found that we had common interests in science fiction, fantasy, archaeology, and photography. I had written a couple of novels – the ones you get out of the way before you can write something good. Dan had been playing with some scenes for a story involving an archaeologist in a fantasy land, but it wasn't coming together. One day over lunch he mused that perhaps it should be a science fiction story instead. I said, "Oooh, can I write it?" That night I shot him the first chapter of Sellenria, and the collaboration started.
We wanted a solid grounding in science so that when the protagonist found a world that seemed carved out of a fantasy, he could seek for and find the reasons why it worked. We wanted a solid character arc, as our introverted researcher finds the value in good friends and teamwork, as well as the strength and courage to stop a war and save a unique planet. We wanted to have fun. I think we succeeded in all that, and more.
Join Stenn Gremm as he sets off to solve the mystery of his ancestor who disappeared, leaving only a mysterious red gem. Expecting to do some quiet archaeology, he finds himself stranded, apprenticed to an enigmatic swordswoman, learning court intrigue, and trying to stay alive in a medieval society. All his prior digs had been done by telepresence, and they hadn't prepared him for getting dirt under his fingernails and blood on his hands.
