J. A. Haileyabout this book: While the virtual world makes itself busy curing human mental illness and preventing motor disability, Patrick Sagan and Michael Gales, their human collaborators, are successfully created as digital consciousnesses within the computer.
Screenside's seniors do take some time off to work on integrating them into the Real Virtuality, RV, world, and the two humans have the opportunity to be amazed at the accuracy with which the virtual world has created a relatively physical world within the virtuality.
It does not last long, and they are soon able to steal a small component of Screenside, which they isolate in a supercomputer network of their own, being careful to insulate it from the human Internet.
In due course, BC, Caesar and the irrepressible Esmeralda undertake to physically go and check what it's all about. As the mission will take them into dangerous territory, they go armed and programmed to kill humans - something that needs the tossing out of Asimov's Laws and the disabling of the Norton Quadrant.
They get the information they seek, but are not too concerned, as they are confident that no external force can violate the virtual world.
That is the blunder, for those who have cheated them have the human world as their target!
