Kerry Dillonabout this book: Network of Fear was inspired by the great memories of a loveable rambunctious cat with attitude, who was a great people's cat, but one that knew how to ensure his integrity with delicate but firm enforcement.
To use this as a lead into a novel required a lot of license and imagination, and so began the search for a story line that would allow my fond memories to blend with fantasy, and create Telesphorus a large and hopefully legendary cat.
As I am primarily a science fiction writer, I tackled the task with relish, realizing that such an enhanced cat would feature well as part of a small specialized team in adventures and investigations, of a criminal or of the paranormal.
Two leading diverse characters were created to complete this objective. Roland whose origins gave him a creeping array of paranormal skills became the leading character, and Erik who was more of a rogue and a modern day warrior emerged as his closest friend and the strong arm of the team.
The plot has its roots in the persecution of the Knights Templar that was initiated by Philip of France in the middle ages, and of the extensive amount of their treasures that were never recovered, and here eastern North America was brought into focus.
To ensure a reasonable amount of reality and legitimacy, extensive research of American cities, towns and states was undertaken, with Maine requiring the most attention, as it is there that it all starts and concludes.
The book took me three months to complete, and the cover was chosen to depict the three main characters. As it follows a fight against organized crime and the fear that they generate, the title had its basis from this.
Roland is a journalist who escapes from an unexpected assault, and is thrust into an unwelcome life of fear, violence and sex, where his previously dormant genes give him enough strange skills to evade his pursuers.
Chance and empathy brings a remarkable cat into his life, and some rogue force within him creates an unusual bond between them, which neither can understand, but which each grasps eagerly for the companionship that it offers.
When Erik an aggressive blond Norseman agrees to help him, a great friendship develops, and together with Telesphorus the rambunctious cat, they make for an unholy and unlikely formidable alliance, well suited to fight and survive in this threatening lifestyle
