K. A. Kriskoabout this book: Described as "cerebral fantasy" and "sci-fi with a fairy-tale twist", this fantasy-fiction novel started as a short story. The story came to me while I was driving west on Highway 40 between Dinosaur, Colorado and Vernal, Utah, to pick up drugs for one of my dogs. I was listening to The Decemberists' "The Hazards of Love". That evening I wrote the short story that eventually became the first chapter of "Stolen". By the time I was done with the story, I knew there was more - a lot more. Two weeks later, I sat down and wrote "Stolen" straight through in about three weeks. I followed that with the second book, "Crypt of Souls", and then with the third and final installation. The book was picked up by the Chimera Tales imprint of Malachite Quills Publishing and I was assigned a great editor (from whom I learned a ton!) and cover artist, who has done the covers for the first two books.
"Stolen" has been tagged as acceptable for YA, although I didn't set out to write for a YA audience, and the next two books are a little darker. There's a little political commentary and a little allegory thrown in. And by the way: "Stolen" is not only an event, it's also the name of one of the central characters.
One of my biggest writing challenges is writing on my laptop in my armchair with my two dogs in the room. One of them has a habit of sticking his head around the laptop screen and planting his chin on the keyboard, bringing up hundreds of versions of the calculator function.
Thanks for your interest, I hope you enjoy "Stolen"!
