Warren Siegelabout this book: Historical perspective has become too foreshortened. We tend to think of history beginning and ending with ourselves and our own experiences. In this book I have tried to show how sharing different generational outlooks, even prejudices, can be constructive without being abrasive. The book is picaresque in structure. It follows the activities of an older man who is forced from the safety of his own orbit by family considerations. Israel Bodkin must confront an American culture he is not totally prepared for. He brings a lifetime of experiences, bitter and sweet, to his journey, and an attitude that makes him many unusual friends and ultimately leads to a new career.
The book is broadly satirical. Stereotypes are skewered, prejudices attacked. I think readers of all ages will recognize in the characters traits that they have both admired and derided, sometimes to their embarrassment.
Israel is a compendium of many people I have known and treated as a physician. These are people of a generation often called America's greatest. Whether this is valid or not, I think you will enjoy having Israel Bodkin as your guide through the current maelstrom of life in twenty-first century America.
