Roger E. Brunerabout this book: As a Christian, I'm only interested in reading novels that are "clean." But I still expect them to be well written and to have intriguing characters and a compelling plot.
So those are the kind of books I do my best to write. Some are for teens, some for adults, and some for both. But my desire is to both bless and entertain my readers, no matter who they are. I'm not writing and publishing novels to make money, but to have a positive influence on my readers.
As a seventy-two-year-old preacher's son, I grew up having an inside look at the ministry. I was aware of things the people in the pews didn't know about, and I marveled that God could use anyone in such a difficult vocation.
Maybe that's why I decided to make my protagonist in When Love Won't Wait a miserable minister--one who was coerced into becoming one by his domineering mother. She also plans to select his bride for him not only so he'll marry someone who will make a good preacher's wife, but who'll have the determination and fortitude to help him control his impulsiveness, a problem that has plagued him throughout his thirty-two year of life.
Even the most serious of my novels have at least some elements of quirkiness, and this one is--I believe--my quirkiest novel yet. It was fun to write, and--unlike most of my other novels--it was just as much fun to reread as I edited and revised it.
I've been learning to create what I hope are increasingly professional-looking covers, and I'm especially pleased with this one. The couple is from a stock photo I bought, but the background is actually from a photo I took in Las Vegas of the ceiling at the Bellagio.
I'm not really sure where my story idea came from originally, and the title seemingly came from nowhere. But it turned out to fit so appropriately I never considered changing it.
This book has several important take-aways. No matter how convenient deceit may seem at times, only truth sets us free. Forgiveness can turn enemies into friends. Love doesn't always come at what seems like an appropriate time, but attempting to delay love until the time is more convenient may very well prevent a couple from having everything God intends for their love to have.
I can't imagine any adult reader failing to laugh at and become friends with the characters in this book.
If you need a gift for your pastor or his wife, this one would be ideal. But you don't need to be directly related to the ministry to get a kick out of it.
