Judy Ann Davisabout this book: The year is 1856, and white pine is king of the forest in Central Pennsylvania. "Willie, My Love" is the story of a spunky young woman, named Wilhelmina Wydcliffe, who helps her father run three sawmills that feed white pine logs down the West Branch of the Susquehanna River to the Chesapeake Bay. Their partner, Jonathan Wain, in Maryland ships the logs up the East Coast or across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe to use as lumber or for masts for sailing ships.
When unknown enemies try to destroy the logs and ruin Wydcliffe's logging and lumbering business, Jonathan is forced to travel to Pennsylvania to help.
"Willie, My Love" is a historical romantic mystery I wrote many years ago after extensive research about early logging in Pennsylvania. The manuscript was much too long and needed to be rewritten into a tighter story by cutting 10,000 words.
Readers of this book will enjoy the description of life in 1856 when a well-bred and fast horse was a valuable resource for transportation. Wilhelmina, nicknamed Willie by her mill crews, is an unrivaled rider. There is also much comic dialogue between the characters. Old philosophical codger, Sam Bradley, adds to the humor.
In the end, "Can two stubborn hearts find love among the tall white pines?"
