David Belisleabout this book: The idea for "The Dog Behind Me" came late one afternoon while waiting for the light to change at busy Macleod Trail in Calgary's Willow Park area. I saw a homeless person on the median. He was bent over, writing a message on his battered piece of cardboard. There was a black Labrador retriever lying on the ground behind him. Wham! Inspiration struck. What a story that dog's thoughts could tell. What was it like having a homeless person as your master? I quickly snapped a shot of the scene -- instant book cover. … I sat on the idea for a couple of weeks, rolling it over in my head. What's the dog's story? I made the tale semi-autobiographical, weaving my failed relationship with my own father into a fantasy tale where the black Lab is the reincarnation of the homeless man's father. … While my other works have focused on humor, this is a cathartic tale with drama coming to the fore.
